Cheyenne Lee (b. 2001) is a Detroit-based interdisciplinary multimedia artist exploring how our environments shape us. Influenced by Art Deco and mid-century modern aesthetics, her work showcases a sensitivity to color, material history, and form, creating pieces that feel at once familiar and quietly exploratory. Working with two- and three-dimensional abstract forms, she plays with texture, structure, and spatial tension to investigate how spaces can hold, guide, and ground us. Lee frames this exploration through the lens of girlhood and womanhood, allowing the material itself to act as a carrier of memory, presence, and transformation.
Working predominantly with salvaged and repurposed media, her practice reflects on how the things we use can embody both personal and collective histories. She intentionally sources from the Detroit ecosystem, gathering material from Arts & Scraps, thrift stores, discarded objects, and other artists. This approach is both conceptual and practical, rooted in environmental consciousness, financial accessibility, and a deliberate departure from material excess. By working only with what is available, Lee allows limitation to inform composition and meaning. She integrates items that retain traces of prior use while maintaining a refined, deliberate craft.
